Find Your Fit

The lifestyle of a college student is fast paced, filled with studying, partying, and focusing on everything but health sometimes. When they think of fitness, college students often think of it as daunting, but there are a number of simple ways that can make it exciting and attainable if your goals are made priorities, rather than hassles.

1. Make a Plan

Establish a set of realistic goals that you can work towards, but remember that goals aren’t achieved overnight. . Start a regime to remain focused and optimistic. This is going to make your life better in the long run.

2. Start Strong

Breakfast really is the most important meal of the day. Morning is the prime time to fuel your body with the nutrients it needs to maintain high energy throughout the day. Breakfast isn’t an option if you’re serious about health and wellness. If you don’t have time in the morning, prepare something the night before. For example, oatmeal is rich in vitamins, and other nutrient, and it is filled with slow digesting carbohydrates for extended energy. Add some fruits with a protein shake, great for on the go.

3. Stay Hydrated

Water helps fill you up and curbs your appetite. It also boosts energy, flushes out toxins, boosts metabolism and clears skin. Carry it with you at all times, drinking eight glasses or four Polar Springs bottles a day.

4. Maintain a Routine

You’re a full time student, have a part time job, play a sport or partake in extra curricular activities, so its not always easy to go to the gym on a regular basis. Exercise releases cortisal, the natural stress hormone, and dopamine, an endorphin that makes you feel happy. The excuses for not having time to workout are just that, excuses. Rearrange your schedule, sacrificing time to achieve your goals.

5. Don’t Forget about Nutrition

Incorporate proper nutrition in addition to the time you spend in the gym. We are creatures of habit, so start making healthier choices. Remember, every bite is a step closer to or farther away from your goals.

6. Remember to Stretch

Take care of your existing body so you can obtain the body you want. Loosen up your muscles and get the body warm, a light run helps the blood flow and get your muscle fibers ready to take on your workout.

7. Add Some Variety

Everyone has a plan in the gym, so focus on yours. If it helps, workout with a friend, you’re more likely to stick to your routine if you have a friend to hold you accountable. With summer approaching, go outside, enjoy the outdoors, taking your workout beyond the gym. Change things up to keep your body guessing to avoid thresholds and plateaus. Have fun and test your boundaries.

8. Find your Balance

Remember to reward yourself as you reach your goals. Have the foods you love in moderation. Working out is a way to help you enjoy the life you lead, not alter it completely.

As you begin your fitness plans, don’t forget that health is a lifestyle choice and a way of life.

Hey You, Stop Eating, Please!

Yes, Overeating is unhealthy, a leading cause to our current national issue of obesity ( good thing Michelle Obama is working her campaign), but that is not what I am referring to, I am discussing the ever-growing problem with Gen Y taking on far too many tasks. I know despite the recent Hollywood trend of superhero movies, we (Gen Y) are not equipped with superhuman powers, though some have mutant like tendencies.

So many of us now brand ourselves as prime multi takers and I have no objection to that, I to work well with structure and additional activities to accompany my role as a full time student. Though, as much of an advocate as I am for students to test there limits with co curricular activities, I am noticing more and more that students seem to be overloading there plates with countless amounts of activities and commitments that are impossible to perform at there optimal performance. I use the corny, yet applicable thought, that students load their plates like they are at a buffet. There is so much food that looks enticing and offers so many avenues to of selection, but once you sit down, you often times realize that you have taken far more food than you could possibly consume.

Now, I am optimist, yet with that a realist. I am here to relay the obvious, yet often overlooked; time is not on our side. There is far too much to do, in far too little time. The more the workload, increases more times of stress than positive returns. I encouraged other students that fall into the realm of “ over consumption” to take a piece of mind that I found first hand to accept that were are human and we can not do it all. With that being said, I do take on numerous tasks, but only promises that I now I can deliver with the utmost respect and dedication. It speaks volumes when a student can accept a role and promise that they will dedicate their entire focus and loyalty to a project. It goes back to the phrase used for years far before Gen Y existed,” Quality over Quantity”. I have several projects that I take on and work along with a student, yet the difference is I have the ability to decline projects I know that I cannot make a vital impact and apply myself like I know I can and should. I have a pet peeve, when I am working with a team on a project that I find passionate about I apply my all and become engrossed in the project, so I expect my team to work just as hard. So, it makes no sense for me to speak one claim and then take on a project that I cannot dedicate my all too.

With this all being sad, there are a select group of students that can take on any project and deliver there all or perform above the expectancy that is asked of them. If you are one of those folks, then more power to you, I admire you. Remember this though, if you take nothing else away from this post, a challenge is exciting and I invite the opportunity to learn and reach levels I never have experienced, yet the lack of time should be remembered, if you sacrifice your well being, then you haven’t won at all, you’ve lost.

Lastly, as I become a senior this fall, I can tell you this, enjoy it have fun and never forget you’re a college student, enjoy your time because you will be working for the rest of your life after graduation.

As Always, Take Care.

The Greatest Trip is the one I’ve yet to Take

As of next fall, I will officially be a senior in school. That is three years of the most amazing time of my life in the books (pun intended, read on).

My experiences thus far at school have been some of the most rewarding and memorable of my life, but I am here today to just take moment to reflect on one aspect that I have yet to experience thus far. As of now in my time as an undergraduate student, I have yet to claim the experience of checking out a book.

I’m not saying that my school, Suffolk University isn’t challenging, it’s the exact opposite I have am challenged academically, put in situations that allow me to grow everyday. I value a quality education that I am receiving and don’t take one day for granted. My institution is ranked in some of the most premier collegiate lists for its uncanny ability for producing graduates that make an immediate impact in the professional world and are well-regarded and distinguished alumni. But for all the time I have spent reading, researching and writing, I have done so without every having to check out a book from my library. When it comes to finding sources for research, I am able to find everything I need online, of course I must be cautious about my citing, but the current online databases with journals, editorials and references is amazing to have at current student’s fingertips. The numerous Internet platforms, offer an array of valuable and well-respected sources. Which makes it great to be a collegiate student in the Millennial Generation, cuts the time of past generations who had to dig through a pile of books to find the right resource.

I tell families and students on the university tours I conduct the truth, Suffolk University, like many other academic institutions have an amazing online database, free for student’s access with extremely well received scholarly pieces. The major push at my institution has already began its emergence; many professors are making there texts available online, for free. I think the traditional form of a student being dependant on textbooks will in time be a concept of the past, with heavy current emphasis on reading devices like the Kindle, Nook and IPad, it is no surprise that the traditional form of research for a college student has become an alternative, with the luxury of online research. Just another perk of living in the vibrant time, known as Gen Y.

Rumor has it, I'm in the Clear.

Hello All,

As colleges and universities across the country wrap up their academic years, many students will soon take to the air, maybe to take a vacation, or go back home. So with that, air travel inspires this post.

In a joyous return, Clear is Back. Under new ownership, the Clear Pass Security program is making its storied return to airports, but don't call it a comeback -or actually you can, since thats exactly what it is. Alclear placed a bid to buyout the bankruptcy stricken program Verified Identity Pass, acquiring all assets to generate new vision and re launch the program that offered travelers a favorable security option. The program is based of the premise that it will allow the traveler to experience expedited service at security checkpoints. The Clear program is a must have in my opinion for frequent travelers. I am happy, since my family invested in this program during its original inception. It was sad to see the original run be short lived, but with the declaration of its return, Clear is honoring existing members terms of membership. Branding the newly renovated program as a "customer centric company", Clear Pass will be a program centered around the customer.

The first Clear program reopens this fall, with pricing set at $179 per year for unlimited individual use or $229 per year for unlimited family use. In my opinion if you have the financial means to purchase a membership, its perfect for those who love speedy security lines, aka, for people with little patience for long lines, like myself.

Take care.

The Big iTrip

Hello Wednesday,

"Seeing the web, email, and photos like never before."

Today, I ventured down Newbury Street, with my friend, Luke, to go to the Apple Store to check out the heavily discussed IPad. The exciting platform, compliments of Apple a look.. At first glance I immediately became intrigued by its sophisticated presence. To me, the Apple Ipad goes beyond than solely being branded as a product. Its functions allow it to be deemed and perceived as bold statement, revolutionary idea and creative genius. I would heralded it as the prime push for consumer electronic progression and will forever redefine the way consumers view the class distinction of computing electronics, trailing a path that show emergence of the personal computing market segment.

I am a fan of the Industrial design, sleek display, user friendly software, with its engaging and enlightening operating system and user interface. Also, without a doubt the its range of capabilities, the progression of Apple's applications project with only bode well for the maturity, future of the IPad. Of course the Calendar/Contacts feature would be a huge asset to me as a student deemed " on the go". Of course of all, going hand in hand with my life as a student, the IBook format seems very intriguing.

I am just a little weary of its durability and convenience, it was after all almost named the "ITablet" before its product launch, for good reason, it is a bit to clunky in my opinion and I still cannot shake the image of it just being an enlarged version of the ever popular IPod Touch. I would, love to see a camera instillation within the IPad for convenience and picture capability and video conferencing.

I will probably wait off on the base price of $499 for a 16GB version, as of May 5, 2010.

One thing I can say in confidence, is Apple was surely right when they paired the Ipad with the statement, " A magical, revolutionary product at a unbelievable price". I am curious to how others feel about the IPad, feel free to leave a comment letting me know how you feel.

Take Care.

Me,Myself and My Apps.

Hello All,

Many of you are already familiar with the IPhone and its amazing capabilities. Being heralded as the first internet enabled smart phone by Apple. I think that much like the IPhone, our lives are an exciting platform filled with numerous applications that allow us to experience life at our full potential. I embrace the fact that I live in a DIgital Age, it is such a luxury to be a student, learning about social and academic life in such a progressive time period. I have an ever growing love and eagerness to learn more about the social media landscape, since I am an enthusiast.

I have decided to share through images, since we are defined as a visual entity, logos that I use and resemble my life through applications.

Hope you enjoy

Welcome to the Big Show.

Hello Monday,

Well, yesterday was Undergraduate Admissions second Student Showcase of the year and it was a giant success! A lot of people came on out on a beautiful Boston day to tour our exciting campus and help gain insight as they continue there collegiate search. I heard all the speakers did an excellent job and that their sessions were engaging and informative. I wish I had a chance to hear my dad speak at a parents session as he relayed his student perspective from the eyes of a proud alumni.

This week is a busy, yet fun one. Tonight I have rehearsal for the talent I am performing at the upcoming First Annual Mr. Suffolk Pageant. I am really anxious and nervous to get the talent worked out, since Ive had to switch recently due to my knee injury. But, I am not down, just excited that I could call on a friend to help me take a different approach that will revisit an old interest of mine and hopefully I'm not too rusty for the show Wednesday night.

Tomorrow night I will be attending the Student Government Association Leadership Awards Show at the Copley Marriot. I cannot wait for all the more than deserving winners to presented. I just want to also congratulate all the nominees, you did an exceptional job and there is no doubt in my mind that Student Activities would be no where near as successful and productive as it is now, if not for the hard work of a dedicated, energetic group of student leaders. Also, Suffolk Smile Train is nominated for Best Student Organization, what an honor to be recognized along with the other fine standing student organizations.

Wednesday night at 7pm in the Donahue Cafe is the Inagural Mr. Suffolk Pageant. Six male contestants will perform a group dance number, individual talent, spirit wear and evening wear and vie to become the first ever Mr. Suffolk. Please, come on out and attend what is sure to be an entertaining compilation of talent and laughter.Hope to see you all there in attendance!

This Friday I will be attending the LEAP conference for Suffolk Student Leaders at the Cape Codder Resort to begin planning for next years programs! It is sure to be a fun time.

on a side note, the graduate school search is still in its beginning stages, but I am starting to plan a trip to NYC in may to look at various schools with some friends. It is a scary, yet exciting time, one that I am eager to see how it unfolds.

Alright, now that I have taken up far too much of your time I will leave you all with this farewell...

"Every great journey begins with a single step; and, it is usually the first step that is the most difficult. Though, in time, you will soon come to realize that the journey is essential for growth and discovery"

Keep in Touch.

When Did It Become April 6th ?

Hello Tuesday,

Well it has been some time since,my last post, sorry about that, school has been a bit hectic and doesn't look like it will be slowing down its pace till we reach the finish line known as summer break.

Rumor has it that spring is officially joining us this year, that would be awesome so I could run outside like a mad man.I have been getting over my knee sprain, so cabin fever has me itching to get outside and hangout with mother nature.

In school, the usual is amongst the students, as expected at this point of the year, all the tests, projects, papers and last minute scrambles before exams week pops up and annoys us all. But not to worry because even though students often times get stressed out, myself included, I have a new philosophy on this high stress time period. So many of us are usually looking for an outside source that is causing our problems and hindering out social, academic performances and yes I know that this all comes with the college territory but I want us all to remember that we can be the cure to the sickness. We can change the way we wish to approach the tough situations ahead of us and tailor the outcomes in our favor, changing the way the situation will affect us,for the better. There is always a silver lining, a positive way to look at a situation. When one door closes, another opens.Surround yourself with good company, it will make the journey a lot less stressful if you travel with good vibrations.( Que the Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch music, please)

Let me leave you with this,Instead of feeling down, feel hopeful about new directions that life has in store for you.Look at things positively, trust the process of your beautiful and fufilling life.

As Always,Take Care.

Spring Showcase Success

Hello Monday,

It is a windy one out there, filled with rain and muggy weather, but I am remaining as positive can be and you should be to! I am riding high of the success we all experienced yesterday at Undergraduate Admissions with hosting the first spring showcase of the semester. There was a proactive assembly of various student leaders and faculty and staff. I was fun to work with friends who were helping run the event, while representing Student Government, Summer Orientation,Sawyer Ambassadors, Residence Life and other institutional student programs.

I had the humbling pleasure to speak on one of the Parent Panels yesterday, all day long in the Law School. I served alongside exceptionally respected panel, consisting of Associate Dean, Sebastian Royo and Vice President Christine Perry of Financial Services. We also had two alumnus speakers, Allan Motenko 06' and Kerry Viera 92'.Listening on how their undergraduate tenure translated into professional success was inspiring and reassuring as in a little over a years time,I I am set to graduate...not scary, exciting for the future!! I also truly enjoyed the academic insight by Dean Royo, along with the past student perspective and career track discussion by our studious alum. Of course I valued working for Vice President Perry, she was a great moderator and I hope I get the opportunity to work with her again, just a great lady, good energy and humor, while really balancing the entire information session.

Overall, the entire program was planned and executed very well and I am looking forward to working the event once again on April 11.* My dad is one of the alumni speakers for the date,I want to to try and catch his speech, even though I know his story, it never get old to me.

Alright, I usually take this part of the post to tell you and get out and be active, but I have not been physically active all week since I am in brace, so I am not wuite motivated to the "T". With that being said, just relax and enjoy the night,I hear the poor weather is going to persist into the night,so kick back, relax and do yo' thing.

As Always,Take Care.

Get to Know my World.

These are just a very select group of photos that I think portray a bit of my life at Suffolk.
The first photo, was taken earlier this year, after my flag football team , " The Pelicans" , won the Suffolk University Intramural Championship! Great accomplishment, my roommates and I have played every year since freshman year, its a lot of fun and just a great time.

The second photo is of my roommates and I,before this year's Suffolk University Winter Ball.

The third photo, is the 2008-2009 Suffolk University Program Council Executive Board at the 2009 SGA Awards Show.

The fourth photo is from a celtics game last year where I took my friends, Jen, Taylor and Carrie.

Boston,the city I love

Hello Sunday,

I hope you all are out enjoying this gorgeous day in the city. I love days like today, with the streets filled of people, a vibrance and array of people gather and just partake in the beauty of the city. Today is a postcard day for sure.I took a trip to the Rose Kennedy Greenway in the North End, to meet up with some friends. We then took a nice walk along Christopher Columbus Park, met up with some fellow ambassadors for a bit. It was also fun to finally bust out the "cutoff" tees again. hah!

Days like today always reiterate the fact that moving to Boston was one of the best decisions of my life.

With this last week approaching before spring break, buckle down, work hard in the classroom so that you can have fun and enjoy your break to the fullest. But today, remember, to enjoy and treat yourself right! I just CHALLENGE you to treat yourself right and have fun with the people you surround yourself with, this is a day we should all enjoy !

Im off to hit the books, like a champ.

Take care and stay healthy!

The show must go on !

Hello Thursday ,

So today's weather is a testament to us all by mother nature that spring is still off in the distance and that winter is here with us for the time being. Though the weather is poor today, it will not rain on our parade! The parade of course being Suffolk's Annual Unity Week Showcase. The event is a compilation of entertainment acts put on by students that in some way, shape or form help the student identify who there are culturally and socially. The event will be taking place tonight at 7pm in the C. Walsh Theatre, so may I please suggest, going into the closet and pull out that umbrella, because the trip to temple street is most certainly worth roughing out the elements.

Also this Saturday I am having the pleasure to take part in the Undergraduate Admissions " Students 2 Students" session. I cant wait to work with fellow ambassadors; T.J., Chris, Meg and Mike. That is one star -studded lineup if you ask me!

So let me leave you with this challenge for your weekend. Above all else, enjoy the Weekend ! What can you do that is fun, healthy and exciting and possibly inspire someone else this weekend? I CHALLENGE you to do this all in fun!! Let me know how it goes!

Be safe out there and as always, take care.

Discovery...

I am learning one of the most important things to surrender to is time. Trying to force things just doesn't bode well for us as individuals most of the time. Overcoming obstacles in life take time. When making a life choice that will alter the course of your future, have faith in yourself and enjoy the journey, because that is the beauty of life.
If you are currently unhappy with where you are in life then I CHALLENGE you to look at the journey you traveled that led you to where you are now, have patience with life and be thankful for the little luxuries you have been granted.

As Always , Take Care and stay out of the rain !

Lightening Your Load

Food for Thought...

[So many of you are doing so much everyday to take care of the day. Your a full time student, a full time family member, a full time employee, and the time left for you is minimal and is mostly used for rest. I challenge you to take back sometime for you, some good quality time to use toward your passions, health, and sanity.
Sit down and write down your schedule for the week, collect your thoughts, if there is some fat that can be cut out of your day then snip away, you will not believe the changes that can occur just by lightening your load.]

Monday Funday

Hello All,

Please, do not be alarmed that I am coming to you on Monday, I just woke up today and told myself " Gee,what an awesome opportunity to share with all my loyal fan base the wonders that Suffolk is offering this week. This week is sure to a very engaging week, filled with fun, exciting programs to help educate, inform and make the student body more aware of social prejudice within our culture, by coming together to promote unity on campus.

This Saturday, march 6 is "Students to Students",an interactive information session in which prospective and incoming students, hosted and carried out solely by the Student Ambassadors. I will be speaking about Student Life here at the University and I cannot wait to share my experiences with the students and become apart of their collegiate search.

Quite Your Inner Critic...

This is an excerpt from a person I admire,I thought I would share it with you all since I find it useful to read and process when feeling stressed or bogged down with the weight that everyday carries in our busy lives.

[You know that little voice in your head that has so much power over you. It says you can't when you actually can. It says you look horrible today when you actually are beautiful everyday. It is the voice that we create through years of failure, and judgement on ourselves and others. I guess we could blame a lot of it on our parents, but we are adults now and it it time to take responsibility. My challenge for you is to quite the inner critic. Free yourself of the barriers that this voice has created and love yourself everyday. ]

Rainy Days in Los Angeles ... Or Boston.

Hello All, Sorry to have kept you waiting for almost a full week since my last post, I hope I did not affect to many peoples weeks, throw them off by not consistently posting invaluable Suffolk knowledge on the "interweb". Anyways, my blog title comes about as follows, the first part is from a song by a band I listen to a lot called < Shwayze, just thought it would be clever little play on words, but now that I have read it over, thought about it a bit, I don't like it... But seriously its raining and you should check out the band Shwayze.

Last week was the Vacation Week Information Sessions. It was a fun, interesting experience to take part in, I met a lot of really nice families and was able to offer my perspective of student life at Suffolk which was really fun and engaging. Though with all the prospective students seeking an academic institution to attend for there bachelors degree, it made me a bit anxious to begin my collegiate graduate school search. The major issue though, is I cannot decide if I want to leave Boston and study elsewhere and leave all my friends , or do I want to figure out a situation that allows me to stay in the city I have grown to call home... Stay tuned on that one , because it will be a running theme in future blog posts.

Next Week marks Suffolk's Annual Unity Week with an array of events, feel free to check out the entire weeks slate of events and attend. The week kicks off with the 3rd Annual Multi Cultural Summit , in which I plan on attending , so ill be sure to let you all know how it goes.

Alright im off to the gym to work on my fitness, got to stay in shape in these winter months, especially with spring break right around the corner. I got to be looking good for the island of St. Marteen :) Pictures sure to follow !

Take Care,

John

Vacation Week in Admissions

Hello to all my loyal readers, ( I am aware the amount is ever growing as we share this valued time). I am writing you to check in with you all and share with you what I have been up to since the last time we sat down and shared my happenings on this enthralling blog post. Now,before I keep you on the edge of your seats , letting the anticipation build for much longer, Ill just dive right what this week is all about through my eyes.

This week is Vacation Week for New England area high schools, so that means that accepted, along with prospective students are packing the Undergraduate Information Sessions by the masses. It really is an exciting to time to see all the high school students as they take part in the early stages of their collegiate search, or wether they are taking the last stage measures to soon declare their university of choice. Yesterday , when I attended the Early Action Reception, I was taken aback , that only 3 years ago, my mother and I sat in the audience listening to ambassadors dicuss student life through there unique experiences, flash forward three years time and I was on the other side... wild to think.

Also, last night I attended a mentalist show in the Donahue Cafe, by the name of James David, the event was in the Donahue Cafe, with well over 100 students in attendance, the show was mind blowing and David, really got the audience interacting from the opening act. It was yet another great programming expose by Program Council, my hats off to them for endlessly working to provide premier student programs.

So, this weekend ( Thursday, Friday and Saturday ) night , the Performing Arts Office is having another installment of the Pioneer Series, with the production, "Epic Proportions", the show is free and I have heard nothing but great things about the show, I will let you all know how it goes.

Okay, I have done it once again,I have over stayed my blog time with you all. So I will make off and head out for another tour.

Hope you all enjoy the end of your school week and have a fun, safe weekend.

As always, Take Care.

John.

The Snow Day that Never Was

Hello All,

Yes, this is the first ever John McDonnell , Undergraduate Admissions blog, for your viewing pleasure , I hope I can soon be added to the premier list of your most visited websites.

On a more serious note , I am eager to finally begin to blog for you all, I will surely be learning and picking up tips along the way on how to approach this blogging concept , but I can assure you in time I will be posting like a seasoned vet.

So, this semester is officially a month in the books and I am sad to see each month go by quicker than the previous. Already though student activities has been great. Student Government Association is beginning there Spring Elections, so the canidates are starting there campaigns, it surely is an exciting time for the student body, the energy is definently alive amongst the students.

In other news , this friday night, february 12, SUHA is sponsoring an event called " A Date for Haiti" in which numerous members of student groups will be auctioned off for dates. I am one of the many to be auctioned off, so come on down at 7pm to Donahue Cafe to support an amazing cause with a great group of kids, and hey if youre feeling lucky, maybe you should take a chance and bid on me !

Okay, well now that I have serviced my shameless event plugs, I will leave you with this, I hope you all have a great day, stay warm and enjoy the snowday half day that I just learned is taking place , so have fun be safe and rest up !

Take Care.
